Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, the influential leader of Lebanon's militant Shia Islamist Hezbollah movement, is a key figure in Middle Eastern politics and armed conflict. His leadership has transformed Hezbollah into a dominant military and political force. Nasrallah, who has not appeared in public for years due to fears of Israeli assassination, was reportedly killed in an Israeli strike on Beirut. Hezbollah has yet to confirm his death. Nasrallah's close ties with Iran were instrumental in shaping Hezbollah into the powerful organization it is today. Under his leadership, Hezbollah has trained fighters from Palestinian armed groups like Hamas, as well as militias in Iraq and Yemen, and received missiles and rockets from Iran to use against Israel. Born in 1960 in Beirut, Nasrallah initially joined the Amal movement before co-founding Hezbollah in 1982 after Israel invaded Lebanon. In 1992, he became the leader of Hezbollah after the assassination of his predecessor, Abbas al-Musawi, in an Israeli helicopter strike.
Nasrallah retaliated against Israel with rocket attacks, and under his leadership, Hezbollah fought a low-intensity war that culminated in the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon in 2000. He declared Hezbollah’s success as the first Arab victory against Israel and resisted disarming the group, citing the need to reclaim all Lebanese territory, including the Shebaa Farms. The most significant conflict during Nasrallah's leadership occurred in 2006, when a Hezbollah cross-border attack led to a war with Israel. The 34-day conflict left more than 1,125 Lebanese, mostly civilians, and 164 Israelis dead. Nasrallah's home and offices were targeted, but he survived.
Hezbollah continued to evolve under Nasrallah, notably entering the Syrian Civil War to support President Bashar al-Assad, further deepening sectarian tensions in Lebanon. Nasrallah also maintained strong opposition to the US and Israel, leading Hezbollah to fire rockets and launch military attacks during the 2023 conflict between Hamas and Israel. Hezbollah's involvement escalated with thousands of rockets targeting northern Israel, resulting in Israeli retaliatory strikes. Nasrallah, whose leadership has had a lasting impact on Hezbollah's position in the region, was seen as a key player in Iran's influence across the Middle East. ⚡ ImageCredit: GettyImages
