In a remarkable rescue operation, security forces in Benue State successfully freed 20 medical students and seven other captives from the clutches of kidnappers. The operation, which took place in the Ajide forest area of Ado Local Government, involved a coordinated effort by the military, Department of State Services (DSS), and police, resulting in the death of one suspected kidnapper and the arrest of two others. The students, hailing from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, were on their way to Enugu for the annual convention of the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students when they were ambushed by bandits. Their abduction sparked nationwide concern, prompting the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to deploy tactical units, including helicopters, drones, and tactical vehicles, to locate and rescue the victims.
Speaking on the rescue, a source involved in the operation revealed that both land and air assets were used to track the kidnappers, who were found in the dense Ajide forest. After days of pressure, the kidnappers attempted to escape but were met with swift action from the security forces, resulting in the neutralization of one suspect and the capture of two others. The successful operation was overseen by the National Security Adviser in Abuja, who coordinated the efforts to ensure the safe return of the students. The victims were immediately taken to the National Intelligence Agency clinic in Abuja, where they are receiving medical treatment for their traumatic ordeal. The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the rescue, stating that no ransom was paid, contrary to circulating rumors. He commended the security agencies and local communities for their resilience and commitment to ensuring the safe release of the abductees.
For the parents of the rescued students, the news brought immense relief. Mr. Donald Fagar and his wife, Cecilia, parents of one of the rescued students, expressed their profound gratitude to God for the safe return of their son, who had previously survived a religious crisis in 2022. Similar sentiments were echoed by Paul Shantong's family, who, alongside well-wishers, celebrated the safe return of their loved one. The release of the students also brought joy to the University of Maiduguri student community, who had anxiously awaited news of their colleagues' safety. The President of the Student Union Government, Muhammad Bello, praised the operation, highlighting the power of collaborative action in securing the students' freedom.
