IED kills one, injures 11 in Maiduguri — Police

The Borno Police Command has reported that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated during a protest against bad governance at Deribe Junction near the Federal Government Girls’ College Monguno Annex, Bulumkutu area, Maiduguri. The explosion resulted in the tragic death of one male victim and left 11 others with varying degrees of injuries. Police Commissioner Yusuf Lawal provided this update on Friday, detailing the situation to the News Agency of Nigeria. He stated that the injured victims were swiftly transported to the State Specialist Hospital Maiduguri for medical treatment, while the deceased was taken for an autopsy. The police responded promptly, deploying personnel from the Explosive Ordnance Device, Base 13, who secured the area around a nearby filling station and ensured it was safe.

In a separate incident, a case of culpable homicide was reported in the Biu local government area. According to Commissioner Lawal, Muhammad Wakshama reported that his son-in-law, Ibrahim Bulama, had a disagreement with his wife, Maryam Ibrahim. The altercation escalated, resulting in Bulama striking Maryam with a stick on the head, causing severe injury. She was rushed to the General Hospital Biu, where she was unfortunately pronounced dead on Thursday. The police have arrested the suspect, recovered evidence, and are currently investigating the incident.

These events contribute to a concerning rise in violence in the state, with a total of 17 deaths reported in the past 48 hours and numerous others injured. The Borno Police Command assures the public that investigations are ongoing and that normality has been restored in the affected areas.
