New Harry Potter Series Launches Casting Call for Young Actors

HBO's highly anticipated Harry Potter series has officially launched a casting call for young actors to play the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. The casting call, which opened earlier this week, has been confirmed by the network to Variety. Children between the ages of nine and 11 as of April 2025 who are residents of the UK or Ireland are eligible to audition for these coveted roles. The casting announcement emphasizes the commitment to inclusive and diverse casting, stating that submissions are welcome from performers of all ethnicities, genders, and backgrounds.

Aspiring actors must submit two self-taped videos. One should feature the child performing a short poem or story (unrelated to Harry Potter), and the second should introduce the child, including their date of birth, height, and where they live. Children are also encouraged to use their natural accents in their tapes. While there is no official release date for the series, the casting call notes that filming is expected to take place in the UK during 2025-26. The series will be overseen by Francesca Gardiner (writer) and Mark Mylod (director), both of whom worked on the critically acclaimed show Succession. The series is set to span seven seasons, with each season adapting one of the original Harry Potter books by JK Rowling. Fans will remember that in 2000, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint were cast in the original films. Grint, who was 12 at the time, secured the role of Ron Weasley after seeing an open casting call on Newsround.

While Radcliffe has expressed excitement for the new series, he confirmed to E! News that he does not expect to make a cameo, as the producers are aiming for a "clean break" from the original film ⚡ Image Credit: GettyImages
