The English Premier League has unveiled a set of new rules for the 2024/25 football season, which is set to kick off with the opening match between Manchester United and Fulham on Friday, August 16, 2024. Key Changes: 1: Substitute Warm-ups: Previously, only three substitute players from each team were allowed to warm up simultaneously. This season, the number of substitutes permitted to warm up at the same time has increased to five per team, aligning with the allowance for five substitutions per match. 2: Multiball System: The EPL will implement a multiball system with 15 balls in use to accelerate the pace of play. Players must collect a replacement ball from the nearest cone if the match ball goes out of play and is not quickly retrievable. Ball assistants are instructed to return balls to vacant cones, except for those behind the goals who can return balls to the goalkeeper.
3: Technical Area Discipline: Staff and players in the technical area who deliberately delay the restart of play by holding or kicking away the ball will face disciplinary action. Technical area staff will be sent off, and players will receive a yellow card for such actions.
4: Added Time Calculation: Match officials will only add time to the end of the match if the delay between a goal being scored and the subsequent kick-off exceeds 30 seconds. This change is expected to reduce stoppage time significantly, given the average of 3.28 goals scored per match last season. These updates aim to enhance the flow of the game and ensure fair play throughout the season.
