President Tinubu Unveils National Policy to Retain Healthcare Professionals in Nigeria

In a pivotal move to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system, President Bola Tinubu has approved the National Policy on Health Workforce Migration. This landmark policy aims to tackle the ongoing challenges related to the migration of healthcare professionals and create a robust framework to manage and reverse this trend. The announcement was made by Prof Muhammad Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, on his X handle. According to Pate, the policy is designed not only as a response to the current exodus of healthcare workers but also as a comprehensive strategy to enhance the management and utilization of health workers within Nigeria.

Key Features of the Policy: 1: Comprehensive Strategy: The policy addresses critical challenges facing Nigeria’s health workforce and is intended to transform healthcare human resource management. It envisions a thriving, well-supported, and adequately rewarded workforce to meet the country’s healthcare needs. 2: Nigeria Human Health Resource Programme: Central to the policy, this program will establish regular reviews of working conditions and ensure that health workers, especially in rural and underserved areas, are recognized and rewarded. 3: Digital Health Infrastructure: The policy emphasizes the integration of advanced health technologies, including Electronic Medical Records, telehealth, and a comprehensive Health Workforce Registry, to improve healthcare delivery and distribution. 4: Capacity Building and Professional Development: Continuous professional development will be supported through strategic partnerships and international training opportunities, ensuring that healthcare professionals are equipped with cutting-edge skills. 5: Diaspora Engagement: The policy includes measures to encourage the return and reintegration of Nigerian health professionals from the Diaspora, with streamlined registration processes and attractive incentives. 6: Work-Life Balance: Provisions for routine health checks, mental well-being support, and reasonable working hours, especially for younger doctors, aim to reduce burnout and enhance job satisfaction. 7: Governance and Implementation: The policy will be overseen by the National Human Resources for Health Programme, in collaboration with state governments, to ensure effective implementation and alignment with broader health objectives.

Pate highlighted that this policy reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to a resilient and effective healthcare system. By fostering an environment conducive to professional growth and integrating advanced technologies, the policy aims to retain top talent and ensure access to quality care for all Nigerians. This decisive action marks a significant step towards securing the future of Nigeria’s healthcare sector and underscores the administration’s dedication to transforming the health system for the better.
