In a significant move, the Kano State Police Command has transferred 76 suspects, including a foreigner, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. This action follows their involvement in a series of violent protests that erupted across Nigeria, leading to widespread destruction and looting. The suspects face sedition charges related to their display of Russian flags during the unrest. The protests, initially part of a nationwide hunger demonstration, escalated dramatically, resulting in substantial damage to government and public properties. Commissioner of Police Salman Garba reported that the Kano State Police had worked diligently to manage the fallout, leading to the arrest of 873 individuals and the recovery of various stolen items. The suspects now in Abuja are being investigated for their seditious activities, which included flaunting foreign symbols during the protests. Additionally, the police have arrested 150 people for breaching the curfew imposed by the state government. Six individuals are under investigation for their roles in the destruction and looting of the Kano Printing Press, and 600 more have been apprehended for various crimes such as criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbances, and arson. The police also recovered significant evidence, including two AK-47 rifles and other items looted from key locations like the Audu Bako Secretariat NCC Office and High Court Complexes.
Despite the challenges posed by the protests, the Kano Police Command has achieved notable success in crime prevention and management. This includes apprehending suspects involved in major crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and car theft.
In light of the improving situation, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has announced the suspension of the curfew that was imposed on August 1. This decision comes as peace is gradually restored in the city, with businesses and markets reopening. The Governor’s move reflects the successful efforts of local authorities in managing the unrest and returning stability to Kano. The suspension of the curfew signifies a significant step towards normalcy and highlights the ongoing commitment to addressing the aftermath of the protests while ensuring that those involved in unlawful activities are held accountable.
