Thousands gather as Peru`s late leader lies in state

In Peru, thousands have gathered to pay tribute to former President Alberto Fujimori, who passed away at the age of 86. Fujimori, who was imprisoned for corruption and human rights violations, remains a controversial figure in the country’s history. His body is currently lying in state at the Culture Ministry in Lima, where long queues of mourners have formed.

Incumbent President Dina Boluarte was among the first to arrive, having declared three days of national mourning to mark the occasion. Fujimori's legacy is divisive; while some remember him for his leadership during the turbulent 1990s, others condemn his actions during the fight against the Shining Path insurgency, which led to his conviction on serious crimes.

Critics have voiced concerns that the government is going too far in honoring a leader with such a controversial record, pointing to the atrocities committed under his rule. Nevertheless, the large crowds gathered in Lima show that Fujimori still commands a significant following, even after his death. Images Subject to copyright ⚡ Image Credit: GettyImages
