The United States has introduced new sanctions targeting Russian state media, with a particular focus on RT, which has been accused of acting as an arm of Russia’s intelligence network. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced these sanctions on Friday, accusing RT of playing a key role in Russia’s efforts to undermine democracy both in the U.S. and globally. Blinken explained that RT, formerly known as Russia Today, is part of a larger network of Russian-backed outlets conducting information operations, covert influence campaigns, and military procurement activities. He also claimed that RT has ties to Russian intelligence and is involved in cyber operations. In response, RT live-streamed Blinken’s remarks and dismissed the accusations as a "US conspiracy theory."
RT has also been accused of organizing online fundraisers to supply body armor, sniper rifles, and drones to Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine. The U.S. State Department further stated that RT was coordinating efforts to influence Moldova's political landscape ahead of its presidential elections in October 2024. These latest sanctions are part of a broader strategy by the U.S. to counter Russia’s state media efforts ahead of the 2024 U.S. election. The State Department has even designated RT as a foreign mission, underlining its role in spreading disinformation and supporting Russia’s geopolitical agenda. RT, however, has mocked these accusations, with its editor-in-chief, Margarita Simonyan, sarcastically commenting on the U.S. actions.
While Blinken emphasized that the sanctions are not aimed at censoring content, he reiterated that covert influence activities are not journalism, affirming the U.S.’s commitment to independent journalism. ⚡ Image Credit: GettyImages
